In my piece "Unintentional Patterns" I explore the nature of subliminal patterns. As an autistic individual I have strong pattern recognition. I thought it would be an interesting exercise to try and go against repetition and see if any patterns still arise.
Painting has been my primary medium but I have always wanted to branch into art that is more tangible. "Unintentional Patterns" is made of pom poms strung on embroidery thread and tied to a painted mulberry branch. At the end of each thread is a small hematite bead to keep them straight while still allowing gentle movement.
I did not use any precise measurements when cutting the threads or stringing the pom poms. I attempted to not repeat myself and make each thread unique. Yet patterns still emerged with lines, waves, and blotches of color.
I used to think no one would take and art piece made of pom poms seriously. But then I shifted my perspective to take myself and my vision seriously. By letting go of the expectations of others I was able to create a piece that is impactful and meaningful. My next venture will be to experiment with installation to create an immersive experience of unintentional patterns.
