Cassia McLoone’s work is a deeply personal excavation of memory, identity, and healing—a reflection on growing up in Sioux Falls as an only child to a single mother navigating undiagnosed mental illness. Through photography, sculpture, and installation, she pieces together fragments of her past, recontextualizing childhood images and personal archives to make sense of the journey from adolescence to adulthood.

This exhibition unfolds as a visual memoir, guiding viewers through themes of grief, anger, guilt, and resilience. Each work serves as an attempt to preserve memories, to hold onto moments that have shaped her while processing the weight of trauma and transformation.

About the Artist

Cassia McLoone (Kiowa & Comanche) was born in Minneapolis, MN, and raised in Sioux Falls, SD. Her photographic and sculptural work serves as a personal and communal archive, exploring themes of memory, identity, mental health, and generational trauma.

Growing up in the Heartland, my photographic work began as a survival tactic for myself. I center most of my conceptual narratives around personal memories, as well as the weight of personal and generational trauma that bleeds into each other. My concepts and processes are layered with heavy symbolism and intentionality to create conversations. I find inspiration in healing, the feelings of home, and family photos as personal archives. I want to open that dialogue with my art. I hold a deep respect and gratitude for the Great Plains, my community, friends, and family.
