What does it really take to become an artist or designer? Based on over a decade of in-depth interviews with 100+ professors and students across top BFA and MFA programs, Learning to See offers a behind-the-scenes look at how creatives are trained to think, make, and see the world differently.
From the studio to the seminar, creativity researcher Keith Sawyer reveals the inner workings of elite art and design programs in New York, Chicago, L.A., and beyond. You’ll gain insight into how students are guided to recognize patterns, push boundaries, and develop their own visual language across 20+ disciplines—painting, sculpture, graphic design, architecture, and more.
An essential read for educators, creatives, and anyone curious about the power of artistic transformation, Learning to See explores how the best programs don’t just teach technique—they teach a new way of seeing.
